research

At K.S.A., the design process begins with listening.

Kateri begins with a detailed questionnaire that serves not only to inform her of basic requirements and priorities but also to help the homeowner(s) to gain clarity on their own goals. With the completed questionnaire in hand, Kateri furthers the conversation with an in-person (or virtual upon request) meeting and tour of any relevant existing spaces.

Kateri then takes the information from this questionnaire and an initial consultation and sketches multiple design options loosely by hand.

While Kateri is well-practiced in a variety of digital media, she finds hand drawing essential in the early design process. She approaches design as an art, influenced by her Beaux-Arts training and passion for fine arts. Over years of practice she has developed an innate sense of hand-drawn scale that allows her to think actively through drawing.

refine

Kateri presents her hand drawings to clients for feedback and then begins the work of refinement, making adjustments as needed so that the final product is a true collaboration between architect and client.

Once a design is agreed upon, Kateri moves the drawings into the computer to produce detailed construction drawings that can easily be coordinated with multiple consultants and trades. She can also produce 3D renderings upon request.

guide

Kateri remains a resource for her clients throughout the building process and beyond. She offers a range of design packages, but always encourages a continued relationship that provides support through the stressful and crucial period of construction.
