FAQ

Why hire an architect?

Hiring an architect is an up-front investment that leads to a more thought-out, durable design and avoids the common pitfalls of the “build first, think later” mentality. Some additional benefits are:

  1. Producing a drawing set before committing to a builder allows you to get multiple bids, ensuring competitive pricing.

  2. Architects are trained to think long-term, considering not just initial costs and trends but how products perform over their lifetime, whether you are building your “forever-home” or have re-sale in mind.

  3. Overseeing just one element of a construction project can be tedious, made all the harder when you are a one-time customer. Architects can coordinate between various consultants and trades, drawing upon long-standing relationships to ensure quality work from all.

When should i involve an architect?

You should interview architects as soon as you are serious about building or renovating. An architect can even help with site selection or feasibility studies. Generally, the sooner an architect is involved, the more successful the final product will be.

what should i do before contacting an architect?

  1. Have a clear picture of the finances you have available for your project.

  2. Try to develop a sense of the design aesthetic you would like by collecting images or putting your thoughts in words.

  3. Be prepared to interview more than one architect. This is someone with whom you will be involved over the course of months. You want your architect to not just be talented but also someone with whom you can speak openly and comfortably.
